Drilling fluids are composed of a mix of natural and synthetic additives selected based on operational needs and disposal considerations. Most wells are drilled with water-based drilling fluids. The water content and availability of nutrient sources found in the fluid mix makes drilling muds vulnerable to microbial contamination which in turn allows for the introduction of microbes into oil and gas reservoirs during drilling activities. A comprehensive biocide program should encompass all stages of completions including drilling, given that this activity may introduce microbes into the formation.
