Oxidizer and Long Term Kill BiocideWhat do biocides and washing dishes have in common? More than you think. Stay with me folks, this one is going to be good.

Scenario 1: You’re on a frac job and pre-treat the source water on surface with an oxidizer, looking for a quick kill to ensure the microbial load is knocked down before you start pumping downhole. This is synonymous to just finishing a plate full of spaghetti and rinsing your plate. The plate is cleaner for sure, but is it cupboard worthy? Likely not. The same can be said with your oxidizer. Achieving a quick kill on surface does not equate to long term protection of the reservoir once you start the frac.

Scenario 2: You’re on a frac job and start pumping source water downhole without a pre-treatment anticipating your long-term kill biocide will get the job done and keep microbial loads low. This is synonymous to just finishing a plate full of spaghetti and placing your plate directly in the dishwasher, hoping that magical appliance will give you back a sparkling clean dish. Now we all know as good as dishwashers are, the odds of a beautiful sparkling dish without a pre-rinse is unlikely. The same can be said with your long-term kill biocide. Without a pre-treatment you aren’t giving your long-term kill biocide the best fighting chance.

Scenario 3: You’re on a frac job and pre-treat the source water on surface with an oxidizer, looking for a quick kill to ensure the microbial load is knocked down before you start pumping downhole. As you start pumping downhole you add on-the-fly a long term kill biocide ensuring you are protecting your assets and the reservoir from microbial contamination. This is synonymous to just finishing a plate full of spaghetti, rinsing your plate and placing it in the dishwasher. The end result – a sparkling clean dish ready to go back in the cupboard.

The punchline – one and done doesn’t equate to the best outcome. It’s the combination of rinsing before the dishwasher that gives you the best looking plate. It’s the combination of an oxidizer and long term kill biocide that gives you the best fighting chance against negative outcomes. Treat your frac as you would your dishes.
