Case Studies — Solid Biocides in Real-World Applications

OSP solid biocide products are used across oil & gas, fuels, and industrial water systems where simplicity, consistency, and reliability matter. The following case studies highlight how solid delivery formats — including pre-measured Drop-and-Go options — support effective microbial control under real operating conditions.

In the Eagle Ford, a coiled tubing (CT) service provider faced premature CT failures linked to microbial-influenced corrosion caused by high bacterial loads in recycled produced water. Using the ATP Test Kit, the operator first quantified microbial contamination and then applied 2K7 Water Soluble Paks (solid biocide) to reduce total bacterial counts. After treatment, ATP results showed a dramatic reduction in microbial activity, helping mitigate corrosion risk and improve fluid quality. Ongoing monitoring and maintenance dosing were recommended to maintain control levels.

In northeastern British Columbia’s Montney formation, a series of coiled tubing string failures were traced to microbial-influenced corrosion (MIC) driven by elevated bacterial concentrations in source water. Laboratory testing compared multiple biocides, and 2K7 solids demonstrated longer-lasting microbial suppression compared with alternative chemistries. Field tests confirmed that treatment with 2K7 biocide significantly reduced bacterial levels, and its use was incorporated into the operator’s standard fluid treatment program. Continued application prevented further MIC-related CT failures.

Frequently Asked Questions

General Product Information:

OSP provides a range of industrial biocides in solid form including our Bronopol based chemistries which come formulated as Bugsticks (118 g/0.26 lb), SlimSticks (39 g /0.09 lb), granular (5-gal/19-L pail) and water-soluble packs (1 kg/2.2 lb). The solid DBNPA based chemistry is packaged into 1 lb/0.45 kg water-soluble packs and granular (5-gal/19-L pail) delivery forms. Our solids portfolio is designed for various applications including oil & gas, industrial water treatment, and fuel applications.
Yes. All OSP biocides are EPA and PMRA registered.
Absolutely. Biocide selection depends on water chemistry, temperature, system design, microbial load, and operational goals. Our technical team routinely supports customers with biocide product selection and treatment design.

Product Specific Questions

2K7 Bugsticks/Slimsticks are ideal when balanced efficacy is required, offering good speed and length of protection, especially in batch applications, with direct addition into frac, saddle, hydration, buffer and settling tanks and storage tanks for fuels.
Drop & Go products are solid biocide products that are packaged in cylindrical (118 g/0.26 lb), "Bugstick" form or in 1 kg/ 2.2 lb water soluble packs (WSP’s) and SlimSticks (39g/0.09 lb) designed to be placed directly into tanks, sumps, or vessels, where they slowly dissolve and release biocide over time. Compared to liquid biocides, Drop & Go products are safer, offer improved handling and ease of use, no pumps, measuring, or mixing required. The sealed solid formats help minimize operator exposure, eliminate strong chemical odours, and reduce the risk of spills and splashing. In addition, the Drop & Go products generate little to no dust during handling and are simpler to transport and store, making them a safer and more convenient option for routine microbial control in lower volume water systems.
WSPs are a pre-measured volume of granular biocide, either Bronopol or DBNPA, enclosed in a water-soluble package. The entire pack dissolves in water, reducing handling risk and ensuring accurate dosing.
Liquids are designed for continuous, larger water volume applications, allowing for precise metering and rapid dispersion. The sealed solid formats help minimize operator exposure, eliminate strong chemical odours, and reduce the risk of spills and splashing, with improved safety and ease of handling for smaller water volume batch applications. The best option depends on system design and operational needs.

Treatment & Application Questions

Treatment rates depend on system water volume, total microbial load, and reservoir/process conditions. OSP provides recommended dosing guidelines for all our products and can assist with system-specific treatment calculations.
Proper biocide selection and dosing ensure effective control while minimizing unnecessary exposure. Please refer to product bulletins for typical dosage rates or reach out to our technical team to advise on biocide selection and optimal treatment rates for your application.

Use cases and choosing the right product

Yes, they can be combined, and alternating or combining biocides has been applied to improve performance, reduce overall bacterial load, and address dynamic system conditions. Though many of our biocide products offer broad-spectrum compatibility, lab testing should be completed to verify compatibility prior to combining biocide products and other chemistries in a treatment program.

Performance, Maintenance and Ongoing Use

Our solid products provide significant microbial reduction within minutes to hours. Every system and microbial community is unique, with various limiting factors that can affect biocide performance. High levels of organic matter, oils, or suspended solids can consume or deactivate the biocide, while established biofilms may physically shield microorganisms and reduce contact with the active biocide chemistry. Their performance also depends on adequate contact time and good mixing, which can be challenging in high-flow or poorly circulated systems. Water chemistry, such as pH, temperature, salinity, and the presence of reactive or scavenging species, can affect biocide stability and longevity.
Treatment frequency depends on system risk, operating conditions, and monitoring microbial data. Programs may include continuous, batch, or periodic shock treatments, that vary based on the application. Microbial testing, including a biocide efficacy study, can be utilized to determine what biocide and optimal loading to achieve suitable microbial control.
Unlike antibiotics, biocides do not have highly specific targets within bacterial cells, which prevents the risk of antimicrobial resistance. Routinely rotating biocides to prevent resistance is not necessary on most occasions. When a biocide appears to lose effectiveness, it is typically due to changes in system conditions, such as increased contamination, altered operating conditions, new nutrient sources, or under-treating, rather than microbial resistance. Further microbial testing such as qPCR or DNA 16S sequencing may be required to determine microbial functional groups and specific genus, to determine the optimal biocide(s) for the application.
Yes. OSP supports clients with microbial monitoring strategies, diagnostic testing, treatment optimization via biocide selection studies, and long-term program development.
